The Schengen 90/180 Rule
Essential rules every Schengen traveller must understand
You may stay in the entire Schengen Area for a combined maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period — this applies across all 27 member states, not Switzerland alone.
The 180-day clock starts from the date you first set foot in any Schengen country on that trip — not from January 1st or any fixed calendar date. Plan carefully.
Overstaying even by a single day can result in future visa rejection, a Schengen-wide entry ban, and complications with immigration in other countries. Never risk it.
Common Reasons for Visa Rejection
Schengen rejections are avoidable — know what the consulate looks for
Insurance that does not cover €30,000 in medical costs or is not valid across all Schengen states is the most common rejection reason.
Bank statements showing low savings, erratic transactions or recent top-ups without income evidence are scrutinised closely.
A day-by-day travel plan covering every night of the stay is mandatory — vague plans are rejected outright.
Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area.
A previous overstay in any Schengen country is a near-automatic refusal with potential multi-year entry ban.
